Ford B-Max
We recommend: 1.0T Titanium
Price: £17,195
Specs: 125bhp, 147lb ft, 0-62mph 11.2secs, 117mph top speed, 57.6mpg, CO2 119g/km
Essentially it's a fat Fiesta. But the sliding rear doors and lack of a B-pillar make it very easy to load children and it drives with a hint of entertainment. Bonus.

Vauxhall Meriva
We recommend: 1.6 CDTI SE
Price: £21,340
Specs: 109bhp, 221lb ft, 0-62mph 12.5secs, 115mph top speed, 74.3mpg, CO2 99g/km
How do you make a small Vauxhall people mover more exciting? Add suicide rear doors, a solution almost as useful and arguably more eye-catching than the B-Max's.

We never rated the old B. Thankfully this one's much better, and especially useful for those Waitrose runs when falafel stocks are running dangerously low.
