Subaru, Land Rover and Volvo headline recent recalls

Safety concerns have prompted Volvo, Subaru, Land Rover, Citroen and General Motors to recall certain models in the past week for various manufacturing faults.

Model year 2017 Volvos – including the V40, V40 Cross Country, V60 Cross Country, S60, XC60 and XC90 – have been recalled for a fault that could cause airbags to improperly inflate during an accident.

Subaru Liberty GT vehicles built between 2007 and 2009, WRX and STI models from 2009-2014, and Forester XT variants manufactured from 2009-2012 have all been recalled by the Japanese carmaker for a potential fault with the secondary air pump relay.

If a flaw is found with the relay, the secondary air pump can engage continuously and eventually overheat, presenting a potential fire risk.

Owners of Jaguar Land Rover's Discovery Sport and Range Rover Evoque models sold between March 31 and August 25 in 2016 have also been notified of an incorrectly assembled right hand lower control arm to knuckle joint in the front suspension.

Faulty vehicle owners will be contacted via mail and are encouraged to return their affected vehicles to the appropriate authorised dealer.

If a heavy impact is made to the front right wheel, for example with a deep pothole or kerb, the front suspension could fail and lead to a loss of control when driving.

Citroen has recalled its C4 model upon finding that the wishbone bolts in the front suspension could potentially not be manufactured to the correct specification.

All variants sold between November 2014 and January 2015 may suffer from reduced steering control if the bolts break.

Meanwhile, Performax International, Australia's biggest converter and retailer of American vehicles, has recalled right-hand drive converted Chevrolet Silverado 2500 and 3500 models, in addition to the GMC Sierra 2500, purchased between May 2015 and October 2016.

Concerns with the sensing and diagnostic module (SDM), that controls airbag and pretensioner deployment, led to the recall with a malfunction resulting in the potential failure of safety aids.

Other than the Sierra and Silverado owners, who should contact Performax directly or take their defective pick-ups to an authorised dealer where the SDM can either be replaced or reprogrammed, all other faulty vehicle owners will be contacted via mail and are encouraged to return their affected vehicles to the appropriate authorised dealer for a replacement or repair of the damaged parts.

Any repair work that is carried out will be free of charge to affected customers.
