This is the fastest Porsche SUV ever

Not content with just showing off the new 911 Targa 4 GTS at the Detroit Auto Show, Porsche also went to Motown with a facelifted and even faster version of the Cayenne Turbo S. How fast? Sub-eight minutes at the Nürburgring, that's how fast.

We'll get to that 'Ring time shortly. First up, Porsche has redesigned the turbochargers - they're now housed directly in the exhaust manifolds - to boost both power and torque of that 4.8-litre twin-turbo V8 by 20bhp and 31lb ft respectively.

Which means the headline stats for this Turbo S now stand at 562bhp and 589lb ft of torque. All that is fed through an eight-speed auto ‘box and delivered to each wheel via an electronically controlled multi-plate clutch. That combo, in conjunction with the added power and torque, sees the SUV shoot from 0-60mph in 3.8 seconds (0.4 seconds faster than before) and on to a top speed of 176mph (an improvement of 1mph). Yep, us too.

There are monster 420mm carbon ceramic brakes with 10-piston calipers up front to slow the 2.4-tonne beast down, with 370mm four-piston ceramic discs at the back. These are utilised in a revised PTV Plus system - a torque vectoring device that brakes inside wheels to improve agility.

Throw in a tweaked Dynamic Chassis Control into the mix - an update that trims body roll when turning into corners - and you can see how Porsche has snatched the incredibly useless title of SUV ‘Ring King' from the Range Rover SVR.

The Cayenne S was let loose round the Green Hell late last year and came home with a Nurburgring lap time of 7min 59.74sec. That's over 14 seconds quicker than the really, really rapid Range Rover and makes the 'S' the first SUV to limbo under the Nordschleife's eight minute barrier.

Aesthetic changes include 911 Turbo-inspired 21-inch wheels, new dynamic LED headlights, gloss black trim and a new cream and black interior scheme contrasted with carbon fibre trim.

How much? £118,455 when it goes on sale in March. But for that privilege you'll be able to tell everyone in the school car park that you've got the fastest SUV out there.
